Professional Development - Training
The JASON Project's comprehensive professional development program is designed to increase teachers' expertise in implementing inquiry-based science curricula in the classroom and prepare them to use JASON curricula with their students.
Available Offerings:
At JASON workshops, teachers learn about and practice:
- Motivating and inspiring students using JASON's unique "great explorers and great events" curricula
- Incorporating hands-on, inquiry-based lab investigations
- Integrating technology and multimedia into lesson plans
- Teaching strategies to differentiate instruction
- Reading strategies to improve student literacy
- Effective classroom management
- Science content necessary for effective instruction
Taught at your site by JASON Lead Trainers, workshops include:
- A comprehensive overview of JASON's free curriculum resources
- An in-depth look at one JASON Mission, with a focus on lesson plans, lab activities, video resources, and online games.
- A sampling of additional Missions in which teachers collaboratively conduct lab investigations
- Hands-on introduction to JASON Mission Center online resources
- Demonstration and discussion of best practices in curriculum implementation and student engagement
Hands-on Train-the-Trainer Seminars
- Modeling of best practices for training others, and strategies for creating successful JASON training sessions
- Hands-on practice developing and presenting training activities
- Official certification as a JASON Field Trainer
- Access to JASON's Field Training Resource Center, including all survey and logistics tools and ongoing mentoring by JASON staff
All workshops feature six to seven hours of training per day, with a maximum of 25 participants allowed per session. Prices may be found below and include:
- All trainer stipends and expenses.
- Training materials.
- One Teacher Pack/attendee in the appropriate curriculum (one Teacher Edition, one Student Edition, and one DVD).
- Train-the-Trainer participants receive access to all JASON online trainer materials and tools. .

Customized Workshops
Customized workshops include multi-day, multi-curricula workshops based where you pick the curricula based on your teachers’ needs. Also, upon request, JASON can work with you to customize workshops to meet other district/region priorities. For example, workshops can be tailored to focus on areas such as differentiated instruction, non-fiction literacy and technology integration. JASON Summer Academy
JASON’s most intensive training program revolutionizes the way teachers deliver instruction and engages diverse student audiences with an intensive, project-based learning experience.
For teachers, this customizable, 120-140 hour offering delivers:
- Pre-Academy training in science content, instructional strategies and lesson planning
- Daily practice delivering inquiry-based instruction to students in classroom and field environments with a low student-teacher ratio
- Team-teaching with colleagues and JASON Lead Trainers
- Daily critiques by students, fellow teachers and JASON Lead Trainers, followed by guided preparation of the next day's lesson
- Certification as a JASON Field Trainer provides continued follow-up and mentoring during mainstream classroom implementation and access to resources to train other teachers
Equally enriching for students, the Academy offers:
- JASON's standards-based curriculum enhanced by fieldwork with scientists and local researchers and interaction with online games and models
- Career awareness discussions with scientists
